| As much as Ed wanted to stay home with Audrey, he had to go to work. It was a night shift, so there wasn't much happening, but it gave him time to think. He couldn't believe that Audrey was really pregnant. He just couldn't comprehend the fact that he'd be a father in less that a year. It was almost too much to take in. To his surprise, he saw someone by the side of the road. He pulled up. "You need a ride?" he asked. It was an old man, carrying a cane, sitting on a bench. "Yeah. Now you show up." the man grumbled, and climbed into the backseat. Ed looked at him in the rearview mirror. "Where to, sir?" he asked. Ed hated it when he had to be polite, but he knew that anything less would set this guy off. "LIBRARY!" he practically shouted. Why would anybody want to go to the library in the middle of the night, Ed wondered. "Right away sir," Ed said with fake politeness. "It'd better be," the man grumbled. HE STARTED HUMMING AN ANNOYING SONG WITH A CATCHY TUNE and kept it up the whole ride over. It was short, and he hummed it OVER AND OVER AGAIN. Ed was so glad when he finally got to the library. The man walked out as soon as the car stopped, without bothering to pay. Ed leaned out the window. "Sir, sir, you never paid!" he called, hoping the man could hear him. He turned. "And you think YOU deserve payment?" he asked snidely. "Sir, it's a law that you pay for a taxi." Ed tried to stay calm, and not let this geezer get to him. Said geezer said nothing, just turned and walked away. "What's HIS problem?" Ed asked to himself, then HE STARTED HUMMING THE CATCHY, ANNOYING TUNE as he drove away. | |
